Mitchell Langford
My name is Mitchell Thomas-Langford, and I’m from Halifax, Nova Scotia, with roots in the Thomas family from East Preston. I was raised in the military town of Oromocto, New Brunswick, where my love for the forest and wildlife first developed. The woods were a playground for my friends and me, and they became the foundation of my sense of belonging and responsibility to protect and educate those around me. I'm a proud father to an incredible 10-year-old daughter who constantly humbles and inspires me to be a better person, father, and community member.
I recently shifted careers; after working as a professional cook in HRM, I earned my high school diploma with honors, a pivotal moment that showed me I could achieve anything I set my mind to. This accomplishment motivated me to transition to college, where I decided to pursue a career in natural resources. I completed a two-year program in Natural Resources Environmental Technology at NSCC Lunenburg, graduating in June 2024.
Currently, I am working with the St. Margarets Bay Stewardship Association on a funded contract for a River Restoration Project within the proposed Ingram Wilderness Area. As this contract concludes in November 2024, I’ve also been collaborating with the Medway Community Forest Coop as part of their Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) Strike Team. Working with these organizations, whose missions center on environmental protection, has been immensely rewarding.
I have supported the Green Party since the Harper Conservative government, when environmental impact assessments became more lenient, often favoring large corporations over local habitats, communities, and wildlife. Since 2010, I’ve been actively involved in the Green community. Alongside my best friend, Kristen Cameron, I co-founded a non-profit called Wake Up to promote environmental responsibility within local communities. Over three years, we worked with Mayor Peter Kelly to clean up Eagle Rock in Bedford.
Additionally, I’ve volunteered with the Ecology Action Centre for their Christmas Tree Drive during
COVID, with the Clean Annapolis River Project on species-at-risk surveys for wood turtles, and with the Medway Community Forest Coop’s Hemlock Hero training in 2022. Recently, I trained with Mike Lancaster, Executive Director of the St. Margarets Bay Stewardship Association, to serve as a Resident Steward on Micou’s Island and the Bluff Trail in HRM. These volunteer roles allow me to contribute to environmental stewardship and pass on my knowledge to my daughter.
In my free time, I enjoy exploring local beaches and trails with my daughter, watching Bob’s Burgers, and teaching her how to cook her favorite meals. We also love birdwatching in saltwater estuaries, especially searching for belted kingfishers, one of my favorite birds. When I’m not with her, I’m often hiking, camping, or practicing yoga to maintain a healthy body and mind. Working as a Green Party candidate is a privilege, enabling me to contribute toward ecological stewardship, social justice, and equitable, democratic governance for all communities in Mi'kma'ki, Nova Scotia.
