Dr. Mark Embrett is a born and bred Nova Scotian with roots in Cape Breton and experience living throughout Nova Scotia. Born in Sydney Nova Scotia, Mark was raised by two working parents and got to experience Nova Scotia working life at an early age. In 2000, Mark took that work ethic and an interest in science to St. Francis Xavier University, where he graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science. Afterward, Mark continued work in various industries including hospitality & service industry and construction; but it was his interest in improving health that drove him to pursue a Masters in Health Services Research at Dalhousie. After graduating in 2010, Mark observed major challenges with Nova Scotia social and healthcare systems, especially with mental health and childcare. To continue to gather expertise and develop skills, Mark pursed a PhD in Health Policy at McMaster University, where he graduated in 2017. Since, Mark has continued to gather national and international expertise in health services and policy in order to support health system improvement in his home province. Mark returned to NS in 2018 and has been working intently on the ground in the health system to support evidence-based decisions that will help support and improve the health of Nova Scotians, particularly those most vulnerable. He currently works as an embedded researcher at Nova Scotia Health. Mark also volunteers s as a director of Fund Development, Marketing and Communications for the Rural Communities Foundation of Nova Scotia.
Mark values equity, diversity and inclusion while fighting for a health in all policies approach that recognizes the impact that government decisions have on individual and population health. Mark’s mission is to use the best available evidence, social values, and public participation to support decisions. Mark believes in using science as one input into policymaking while recognizing the need to incorporate public input, social context, and the needs of the most vulnerable into decision making. He has a passion for supporting equitable solutions that are fair for everyone and help support those most in need. He recognizes the need to address inequities in Nova Scotia’s rural populations, youth development and indigenous populations. Mark believes in public participation and collaboration into the design of government policies and will continue to fight to have those voices heard. BY joining the Green party, Mark has teamed up with like-minded individuals that can make a real difference in the future of this province. That’s why Mark supports the elimination of poverty throughout Nova Scotia through innovative workable solutions such as minimum income. Mark will fight social justice and ultimately promote community health and prosperity throughout Nova Scotia.
When Mark has free time he loves spending it on the beaches of Nova Scotia, golfing, supporting local businesses, cheering on local sport teams and spending quality time with his family and friends.
