I am a newly retired Clinical Social Worker ,who in the past years has operated a private practice, Heritage Hill Counselling Services. I also worked for 16 years in a Mental Health Clinic at the Hants Community Hospital. Previous to my career in Social Work, I was a Registered Nurse who practiced in 4 provinces including Nova Scotia.
I am a graduate of the Saint John General School of Nursing, and have both a Master’s and a Bachelor degree in Social Work from Dalhousie University, 1985-1990 respectively. My interest in environmental/health issues began in the mid 70’s in Millstream New Brunswick ,when I had young children.
I was an activist and confronted the New Brunswick Forestry Department and the James Irving Company about their use of dangerous chemicals. Many of my life experiences have made me a fit to be a lead about Green issues.
My concern for people experiencing employment disadvantage, low pay, social assistance, abuse, racial discrimination, lack of housing, all rang clear in my years as a social worker. Lack of child care also played a part. I spent some time in a northern community in Ontario and my children’s friends were aboriginal. I have also provided counselling and family court services in our local aboriginal communities at that communities request.
I have been fortunate to assist a large family of refugees in the 1970’s and more recently to assist a Nigerian family as they settled in Wolfville. This past year two students(Acadia )who are East Indian have lived with me as we weathered Covid- 19 happily ,giving each other support.
Gardening is a spring ,summer hobby and recently hiked Cape Split to the shock of my children. I love to swim ,sing and learn, I also have 9 grandchildren, not needing Nannie as they move out into the world ,in jobs and sport activities. That describes me I guess.
Guaranteed annual income, health care upgrades are all on my agenda for the future. Serving currently on a senior committee, which has just be struck by the GPC. Senior health is an important issue which includes affordability, doctors ,nursing homes, routine health screening and addresses discrimination issues or ageism.
