Dr. Mary Lou Harley is a mother and grandmother, an educator and consultant, and a committed volunteer on issues of environmental, social and economic justice.
Mary Lou takes seriously the responsibility to facilitate appropriate development while protecting the public and the environment. She has made presentations to various levels of governments and international conferences dealing with such issues as sustainable energy, radioactive wastes, wind power regulations, land use planning, protection of agricultural land, well water protection, and mining developments.
Mary Lou earned her PhD in chemistry in 1980. Her experience includes teaching at UNB-SJ, operating an organic market garden, product research and development, and running a consulting company. As a volunteer, Mary Lou has been a consultant for many organizations and community groups, and she provided educational units on science for school enrichment programs.
Mary Lou and her family moved from NB to the Valley in 1995; she and her husband live in Port Williams. Since 2008, she has taken an active role in Green Party NS, including several terms as Co-President. She was the Green Party candidate for Kings North in the 2013 provincial election.
